Uniqlo’s Barrel Jeans Made Me Rethink The Jeans I’d Never Wear

I will admit that I had already made up my mind about barrel jeans before I actually tried a
pair on. The shape, at least from a distance, always looked a little too balloon-like for me, with that exaggerated volume through the middle and a silhouette that seemed to demand a very specific kind of styling. So when I spotted the Barrel Jeans at Uniqlo, I was curious, but deeply sceptical. Then I tried them on, and, somewhat annoyingly for my preconceived opinions, they looked really good. Okay, a little pre-warning: I had so much fun trying on the jeans that I ended up modelling them myself. Modelling is clearly not my forte, so please tolerate the weird but very enthusiastic poses. In my defence, the jeans were just that comfortable.

The first thing that surprised me was the shape. On the hanger, the jeans can look quite dramatic, especially around the thigh and knee. On, however, the silhouette makes much more sense. The curved leg gives the jeans their distinctive barrel shape, while the proportions keep them from looking oversized in the way I had imagined. They have volume, certainly, but it feels considered rather than overwhelming. For someone who usually gravitates towards more familiar straight-leg or wide-leg jeans, that was a pleasant surprise.
Then there was the colour selection which I absolutely loved. Uniqlo has the Barrel Jeans in quite a few shades, from different washes of denim to beige, black and brown. I bought a brown pair! It has that slightly dressed-up quality that makes you want to wear it with a good top and call it an outfit, while still being as easy as your favourite pair of jeans. The beige was another one I kept coming back to, especially because it would work so well with lighter tops and knits.

And, as you would expect from Uniqlo, the comfort was a major win. These are the kind of jeans you can actually move around in. There is room through the legs, so you can sit, walk, run errands and generally go about your day without constantly thinking about what your jeans are doing. After trying on enough pairs of denim that look great for exactly five minutes before becoming uncomfortable, I appreciated this a lot. Uniqlo clearly understands that jeans should be lived in.
Some cute outfit ideas were running through my mind while trials. The classic blue Uniqlo denim with a tank top and sneakers? Easy grocery-run uniform. The beige pair with a simple top and a dainty cardigan wrapped around the shoulders? Very cute brunch territory. The black version with a slightly sexier top? A fun night-out option that still comes with the advantage of being able to actually move. And yes, I am going to say it: dancing is considerably easier in pants. Forgive me, I am a big-pants person.

That versatility is probably what changed my mind about the silhouette. Barrel jeans can initially look like one of those trends that requires a complete wardrobe rethink. In reality, the Uniqlo pair works with many of the things that are probably already sitting in your wardrobe. A fitted tank balances the volume. A cropped top gives the proportions some definition. A cardigan makes the whole thing softer. A sharper shirt can make the jeans look more polished. Even a simple oversized tee works, provided you are comfortable committing to the volume.
I also like that the Uniqlo Barrel Jeans have a bit of personality without becoming difficult. Straight-leg jeans are straightforward. Wide-leg jeans have become a wardrobe staple. Barrel jeans have a more recognisable shape, which gives even a very simple outfit something extra. You can wear a tank, throw on the jeans and leave the rest of the outfit alone. The silhouette does enough of the work.

And perhaps that is what I liked most about trying them. I had gone into the Uniqlo fitting room expecting to prove my original theory right. I was convinced the balloon shape would look strange on me, or that I would spend the entire time wondering what exactly I was supposed to wear with them. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy they were to wear and, more importantly, how many ways I could imagine wearing them.
My initial scepticism, then, was largely misplaced. I still understand why barrel jeans can look intimidating when you see them on a hanger. The curved shape is very different from the jeans many of us have spent years wearing. But the Uniqlo Barrel Jeans made the trend feel far less intimidating once I actually put them on. They are comfortable, easy to style and different enough to make a familiar outfit feel a little more interesting.

I went in expecting to take the jeans off and move on. Instead, I walked out with a new appreciation for barrel jeans and, apparently, several imaginary outfits already planned in my head. That feels like a pretty good review to me.
